Time To Start Thinking About Spring Gardening

These warm winter days have me thinking about springtime.  I'm itching to get outside, check the bee hives and start searching for my early spring flowers to start popping their heads up through the snow / frozen ground.

Here's my pick of easy care perennials  to ensure an ever increasing amount of garden space around my yard.  These unfussy, long-lived plants pump out beautiful foliage and flowers year after year. Plant in fall or spring when cooler temperatures help them get a healthy start...

These low-growing plants (6 to 10 inches tall) with five-petaled flowers are top sellers year after year for good reason.

They deliver lots of blooms over a long period, come in a huge range of colors ― both solids and bicolors ― and bloom through winter in much of the West. ('Dynamite Blotch' is pictured here.)

The large-flowered, faced varieties may catch your eye first in nurseries. But when planted en masse, non-faced, single-colored varieties are often more striking.

Like their relative the pansy, violas light up gray days with happy colors and sweet fragrance. They’re a wonderful overwintering plant and self-sow readily.

Rain really beats down pansy flowers, but violas bounce back quickly.  Violas are smaller than pansies (between the size of a nickle and a quarter) but have more flowers per plant. They come in blue, yellow, white, and cream and bi-colored varieties.

Use violas for mass color in borders and edging, as covers for spring bulbs, or for quick color in winter containers. Violas take sun or part shade. Pick flowers to prolong bloom. Remove plants in summer if they begin to look ragged.

Colorful and super tough, ‘Ruby Star’ from Monrovia nurseries has large pinkish-purple blooms with pronounced coppery centers.

The plant grows 2-feet tall; the flowers are 4 inches across. Among the many showy hybrids are ‘Orange Meadowbrite’, butter-yellow ‘Sunrise’, and reddish-orange ‘Sundown’.

Deep golden petals radiate from chocolate centers on 2- to 4-inch-wide flowers.

Plants reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 1 ½ feet wide. Shorter varieties such as ‘Goldilocks’ and ‘Toto’ top out at 10 inches tall.

Every garden should have one of these beauties.

English lavender is the most fragrant, but Spanish lavender’s deep purple “rabbit ears” stand out in garden beds.

Where space is tight, grow a compact form; one we can’t wait to try is Lavandula angustifolia ‘Thumbelina Leigh’, coming late this year from High Country Gardens. It stays 12 to 15 inches tall.
