What The Heck Is A Walkable Community
Simply put, a "walkable" community is one where there are lots of places to go with lots of fun things to do, all within walking distance of your home!
Truly walkable communities are characterized by much more than good sidewalks and street crossings -- they include many attributes: a mix of uses, frequent street connections and pedestrian links, timeless ways of designing and placing buildings. They create desirable places to spend time in, to meet others. All core principles for successful towns and cities evolved naturally from earliest times (cities were first built about 6,000+ years ago) and were practiced until about 100 years ago. Only then were these principles abandoned for "modern" patterns based on increased personal mobility. The most thriving cities are now returning to the time-honored principles. Why? More than 80% of North Americans want to live in walkable neighborhoods, towns and cities, but only a small percentage of them have all the right qualities.
If you’re more of a text book answer type of person, Wikipedia defines "walkability" as a measure of how friendly an area is to walking. Walkability has many health, environmental, and economic benefits. Factors influencing walkability include the presence or absence and quality of footpaths, sidewalks or other pedestrian rights-of-way, traffic and road conditions, land use patterns, building accessibility, and safety, among others. Walkability is an important concept in sustainable urban design.

Learn More About How Dayton & Bellevue Are Joining The Trend Of Walkable Communities
Walkability is the sum of the elements. Walkability is rarely measured by quantity, largely by quality. When a community becomes walkable the first and most important sign of success is the diversity of people, the multiple building types and uses, and the multitude of experiences all to be found in one place. Some people refer to walkability as “place making”. Where this is true, walkability describes the actions of the people seen… They are moving about; watching out for others, and moving from place to place. Some of these people have a mission, many do not. They are there because there is a “thereness” to where they are. In a truly walkable neighborhood, it is virtually impossible to look in any direction and not see other people. Often these people are walking or bicycling, of just milling about. The word “loiter” has no meaning, “lingering” does. And, the longer people linger, the better the place is.
As quality of a place goes up the age range of those milling about broadens too – and, in time a half dozen children will be in view, perhaps accompanied by an older sibling, parent, grandparent, and if really walkable, no adult in sight. Elders will be sitting on benches watching over others, feeling secure in their habitat. Jane Jacobs tells an important story in “Death and Life Of Great American Cities” of how people watch over, know and protect their neighborhood from any wrongful act.
